Since its release, the film has been translated into over fifty languages and won several awards including two National Film Awards at the 63rd National Film Awards ceremony held on 3 December 2009. The film was also showcased at the International Film Festival of India in 2005. It earned worldwide ticket-sales of 2 million USD in 2006 to become one of the top ten highest-grossing Indian films overseas after Devdas, according to Box Office India. The film is based on the Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay novel Devdas. The film is set in the United Kingdom and India in the years just prior to Indian independence in 1947. Even though he worked with Aditya Chopra on the original script, Aditya Chopra dropped Rahman as director after it turned out to be a musical which original screenplay by well-known writer Chetan Bhagat was known to contain. To replace him, he entrusted Rahman with composing the score for the film, but Aditya Chopra later removed Rahman from this assignment as well. However, both songs "Mohe Rang De" and "Mehndi Hai Naa Zara" composed by A. R. Rahman and lyrics of "Rang De" penned by Gulzar were retained in the film. The original soundtrack album was released on 14 January 2006 at Silver Jubilee Cinemas, Hyderabad, and features six songs composed by A. R. Rahman and lyrics written by Gulzar for which Rahman has won his tenth Filmfare Award in the Best Music Director category in 2004. The release of the soundtrack in Andhra Pradesh was held in Silver Jubilee Cinema Hall in Hyderabad at 11 pm on 5 February 2006, with a special screening of the film along with ad breaks.
